Sunday Untucked
Generational connection is of tremendous importance in planning methods of training and discipleship--especially when a congregation is composed of four generations!
With the transition of each generation comes a change of culture—particulary in this age of high-speed technology. The fact that younger age brackets are easily captivated by the latest style, gimmick, or invention poses yet another challenge. Refusing to accept any of their revisions, particularly in music or clothing, could potentially limit church growth, while wholeheartedly accepting them could damage sacred traditions the elder generation tenaciously clings to.
But with lots of prayer and a bit of flexibility, this obstacle can be overcome. One of our strategies at C.T. is to designate the worship services for one weekend a month as “Sunday Untucked.” On this day, leaders and senior members are encouraged to dress more casual and relaxed. The music and video presentations will also be more contemporary and cutting edge.
In this atmosphere, the elder generation is encouraged to set aside the norm and connect with the youth. This simple act of generosity demonstrates that traditions and values should be based on a scriptural foundation, rather than one’s attire or musical preference.
Because this alteration has proven so effective, generational differences are beginning to disappear and new connections are forming. On the last weekend of every month, visitors will observe the Sunday Untucked “business casual” dress code of jeans, pullovers, and maybe even tennis shoes. So, come relaxed and ready to connect!
